A 14 year-old girl, wounded in a December 20 shooting on South Street in Newburgh, is on the road to recovery, according to City of Newburgh officials.

The girl, whose identity has been withheld, was reportedly walking in the area with three other girls that Friday night. Once the group heard gunshots ring out, they all ran for cover from the gunfire. Two bullets were said to have struck the girl, with one of the bullets entering and exiting her arm and the other bullet hitting her and becoming lodged in her back.

Officers performed life-saving measures on the girl until she was transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital at 70 Dubois Street in the City of Newburgh. She was reported as being in critical condition at the time and she was later transported to Westchester Medical Center.

The girl was released from the hospital the weekend prior to the New Year’s Day holiday.

“I can confirm that the victim was released from the hospital and is recovering at home,” said City of Newburgh Chief of Staff Mike Neppl.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting but the investigation is active and on-going. Police presence has increased on South Street in response to the shooting incident. The investigation is being handled by the City of Newburgh Detective Division, Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force. Anyone with information is asked to contact City of Newburgh Detectives at 845-569-7563. All calls may remain confidential.
