City of Newburgh Police Commissioner José Gomérez announced during a brief press conference on Tuesday, November 22 the arrest of Lamont Williams for the death of 29-year-old city resident Daquan Corbett on the evening of September 29, 2022. A five-year-old boy was shot during the incident but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Members of the media were informed that Williams was tracked down to North Carolina and was taken into custody by the United States Marshal Service Regional Task Force. Detective Justin DeMoulin was recognized as the department investigator for having cracked the case on Williams.

“The City of Newburgh Police Department today wants to send a clear message to all of those who want to commit violence in our city. And the message is clear. If you commit acts of violence against our citizens in our city, we will follow you,” said Gomérez. “Even if you go to North Carolina, we will find you, even if you hide in the closet, and we will bring you back to justice. This is a new police department who is committed to the safety of our community.”

Williams was stated to have been tracked down to a mobile home in North Carolina and was said to be hiding in a closet in order to evade the authorities. Gomérez did not disclose the direct connection Williams had to North Carolina but stated that Williams knew who to reach out to in the state.

On the night of September 29, Corbett was reported to have been shot near the area of Washington St. and Clark St. Officers reported to the scene and found Corbett with multiple gunshot wounds. A five-year-old boy who was riding his bicycle was caught in the crossfire and was also shot that evening. Gomérez shared with the media that a weapon was recovered at the scene that night but did not disclose the type of firearm used and its origin as the case is currently open.

The following evening, a shooting incident took place at Newburgh Free Academy with several individuals shot but no loss of life. When asked if the two shootings were connected in any way, Gomérez said the department does not believe the two are connected.

Both Corbett and the boy were transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital for treatment but Corbett succumbed to his injuries following the shooting. He was pronounced dead later that evening.

The young boy was later transported from St. Lukes to Westchester Medical Center for further treatment. Gomérez was reported to have visited the young boy in the hospital as he recovered from his wounds.

Williams is to be arraigned upon his extradition to New York State and is being transported back to New York soon. No dates have been announced yet for any legal proceedings or trials according to the police.

“Our city will never be defined by these despicable acts. Our city will continue to be defined through community and justice, and unwavering progress. Today’s announcement is one small but important step forward in these efforts,” said Michael Neppl, Chief of Staff for City Manager Todd Venning. “Here in the City of Newburgh, we are incredibly proud of our police department. On behalf of the City Council and our residents, I thank them for bringing the family and community one step closer to the justice they deserve.”
