COVID-19 cases have surged in Orange County. The reported figures were recorded and updated on January 5 at 4 p.m. from the county.

The Orange County Department of Health has reported 82,989 positive cases in the county. 982 total deaths have been reported in the county.

In the Town of New Windsor, there are a reported 1,180 active cases. In the City of Newburgh, there are 957 active cases. In the Town of Newburgh, there are 845 active cases reported. There have been 167 hospitalizations confirmed with one under investigation according to the county.

On Saturday, January 8, the county distributed rapid COVID-19 tests in the cities of Middleton and Port Jervis and the Town of Newburgh.

Orange County and Newburgh residents were able to acquire these rapid tests at the Meadow Hill Elementary School building. The town reported that all available tests had been distributed within 20 minutes.

Orange County Executive Steve M. Neuhaus announced that he and the county are looking to set up additional distribution sites starting as early as next week. County residents will have the opportunity to get test kits if they have not already.

According to the county, New York State delivered 15,845 boxes of COVID-19 test kits to Orange-Ulster BOCES on behalf of Orange County last month. These kits were distributed to local schools.

On Christmas Eve, the county distributed 3,000 test kits to residents. On Friday, December 31, 10,000 kits were distributed to Orange County municipalities. On Thursday, January 6, 10,000 kits were distributed at the county’s Emergency Services Center.

On Tuesday, Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney tested positive for COVID-19 and released the following statement:

“This morning, I tested positive for COVID-19. While I am experiencing minor cold-like symptoms, I’m grateful to be fully vaccinated and boosted, which is protecting me from more severe illness.”

“I am following the guidance of the Attending Physician and will isolate while recovering. During that time I will continue to work remotely on behalf of the Hudson Valley.”
