The Newburgh City Council approved to apply and accept a grant for bulletproof vests in the amount of $17,000 with a city match of 50% and adding four dispatchers and two detective positions to the City of Newburgh Police Department. With the addition of the dispatchers, this would help in reducing the overtime hours for the city police department.

According to Police Chief Anthony Geraci, there are 18 members of the police department that are in need of bulletproof vests and bulletproof vests are just shy of $1,000 and this grant would assist the department. Addressing the dispatcher situation, the city looked to partner with Orange County for dispatcher services and the consideration to merge the police and fire department dispatchers was also considered but those opportunities were not able to be pursued following further conversations and contracts. Thus the four dispatchers became the option for the city police department to pursue.
