Historical Society of Newburgh Bay announces Spring events
The Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands has announced a lineup of events this spring, including the unveiling of a restored portrait, an archive workshop, and the reopening of the Crawford House Museum.
The society will host Cocktails and Collections at Crawford House on Thursday, March 20, at 7 p.m., featuring the unveiling of a recently restored portrait of David Crawford, the home’s original owner. Art conservators Matt Soltis and Paul Gould will discuss the restoration process and insights gained about both Crawford and the artist. The portrait was donated last year by Jeanne Shipp Waldinger, a descendant of Crawford, and will be displayed prominently in the historic home. The event is free, with donations encouraged, and will include cocktails and mocktails.
On Sunday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the 2025 Archive Workshop Series will present The Art of 18th and 19th Century Writing, led by Historical Society Manager Jeffrey Doolittle and professional calligrapher Marjorie Politi. Participants will explore historical handwriting styles using archival materials and will have the opportunity to practice 19th-century cursive. A $15 materials fee applies, though members may attend for free.
The society’s Scanning Sundays initiative, which offers free digitization of historical photographs, negatives, and slides, will take place on March 23 (12–3 p.m.) and April 27 (1–3 p.m.). Additional sessions are scheduled for May 18 and June 22. Attendees are encouraged to donate digital copies of their images to the archive to help preserve Newburgh’s history.
The Opening Day at Crawford House will take place on Sunday, April 27, from 1 to 4 p.m., following the archive workshop. The 2025 exhibit in the Stone Floor Gallery will debut that day, featuring a collection of never-before-seen photographs of Newburgh’s Downing Park in the 1950s by local photographer Louis McTamaney.
