845 Halal opens on Broadway

Newburgh City Council members and community partners joined owners and staff of 845 Halal, located at 216 Broadway, to celebrate its official grand opening with a ribbon cutting.

845 Halal, is owned and operated by Rafiq Majeed and his family who are residents of the Newburgh area. According to Rafiq, he and his family first came to the Newburgh area in 1995. The restaurant itself was supposed to have opened a few years prior but COVID put a halt on everything. As more local places are opening again and people are interacting with one another, 845 Halal is ready for customers to come in and Rafiq was eager to welcome all those who wanted food.

Aaqib Majeed, Rafiq’s son, prepared his staff in the rear kitchen area and took several orders as customers came inside the restaurant during the afternoon.

According to Aaqib, 845 Halal had previously held a soft opening in March and the initial reception from the community has been supportive thus far. “We opened our doors up actually a month ago,” Aaqib said. “We just opened our doors, gave out the menus and word of mouth traveled.”

The concept of 845 Halal, according to Aaqib, was to bring authentic American Halal food to the Orange County region. Aaqib further explained that many customers who may have heard about Halal food or who may have eaten it, regularly find it being served in the city at food carts and so with a place like this, 845 Halal can provide quality Halal food right here for the community.

Aaqib further explained that the Halal food receives its name from the process in which it is prepared. This process is most commonly practiced in Muslim religious traditions. Certain prayers are said and specific cutting techniques are used during the meat preparation.

With the Spanish speaking community here in the City of Newburgh, Aaqib said that he has hired staff members that are bilingual to help in assisting the customers. “Everyone should come try our food,” Aaqib said.

845 Halal currently offers dine in, take out and delivery. The restaurant can be found on Grubhub, DoorDash and UberEats. Their hours are Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
