Cornwall officials are scrambling this month to find a way to host its annual summer day camp for local children.
Supervisor Josh Wojehowski told the Town Board last week that it’s still “a work in progress” as he and others work with Orange County to find out what would be required to hold a camp based at Riverlight Park.
“The Town of Cornwall recently received notice from the Cornwall Central School District that we will not have a school building to use this summer to run our summer camp program, due to the planned construction projects going on throughout the district as part of ongoing capital projects,” Wojehowski said in a recent social media post. “We are currently in the process of securing an alternative location to host a conjoined camp with the village as we have been doing for the past few years.”
“We’d probably have to get a tent, and figure out bathrooms, and look at some swimming options,” the supervisor said at the March 11 Town Board meeting. “We’re working with a village camp to see if we can procure two hours a week for our campers.”
The larger town pool, at Riverlight Park, will be closed this year, Wojehowski previously announced, but the kiddy pool is expected to be open.
About 250 children attended last summer’s camp, he said. Still to be decided, if the county okays their Riverlight Park plan, is how many campers they could have this year. “That would be up to the county,” he said.
Councilwoman Rokhsha Michael-Razi asked if a larger location in Cornwall-on-Hudson, such as Donahue Memorial Park, might be a better option. Wojehowski did not disagree, but it was pointed out there is no playground there.
“As soon as we have approval for a new location, we’ll release camp information and registration dates,” he said, adding that they’d like to get that going by April 1. Registration will be online again this year through cornwall.recdesk.com.
