Whether Cornwall voters go to the polls in early voting (through Sunday, Nov. 3) or on Tuesday, Nov.5, they’ll of course be asked to select their choice for president of the United States – Donald Trump and JD Vance on the Republican (R) and Conservative (C) lines and Kamala Harris and Tim Walz on the Democratic (D) and Working Families (WF) lines – but also to vote for a variety of federal and state officials.
As well, they’ll be asked to cast a ballot for one Cornwall Town Justice – incumbent Lynn Beesecker (D,C, WF), is the lone candidate.
Cornwall residents also are going to need to turn their ballots over to vote for not only one New York State proposal, but also two local matters.
The first is a referendum vote asking: ‘Should a term limit of six two-year-terms of office for the Town of Cornwall Town Supervisor, and a term limit of three four-year terms of office for Town of Cornwall Town Councilperson be enacted?’
The second is a referendum vote asking: ‘Should the term of office for the Town of Cornwall Town Clerk be increased from two (2) years to four (4) years?’
Both those matters were discussed by the Town Board for several months before the board voted to take the two questions to the public.
The state proposal on the back of your ballot is an ‘Amendment to Protect Against Unequal Treatment’. It reads: ‘This proposal would protect against unequal treatment based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity and pregnancy. It also protects against unequal treatment based on reproductive healthcare and autonomy’. The ballot instructions remind voters that voting ‘yes’ puts these protections in the New York State Constitution. A ‘no’ vote leaves protections out of the State Constitution.
Also on the ballot:
U.S. Senator: Kirsten E. Gillibrand (D, WF) or Michael D. Sapraicone (R, C) or Diane Sare (LaRouche)
State Supreme Court Justice (select up to five): Coleen D. Duffy (D,C), Brett Broge (D,C), Kyle C. McGovern (D,C), Mary Anne Scattaretico-Naber (D,C), Rachel E. Tanguary (D,C) or Thomas Humbach (R), Edward R. Mevec (R), Karen A. Ostberg (R), Mark T. Starkman (R), Leslie Kahn (R)
Representative in Congress: Pat Ryan (D, WF) or Alison Esposito (R, C)
State Senator: James Skoufis (D, WF), Dorey Houle (R) or Timothy Mitts (C)
Member of Assembly: Christopher W. Eachus (D, WF) or Tom Lapolla (R, C)
Family Court Justice: Christine Krahulik (R, C)
