GNSO to present ‘Concert of Concertos’

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) will continue its 2024-25 season with the annual “Concert of Concertos” on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. at Aquinas Hall on the Mount Saint Mary College campus.

The performance, held in collaboration with Moxart, Inc., will feature three celebrated concertos, each highlighting the interplay between soloist and orchestra. Led by Maestro Russell Ger, the program includes Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, which premiered in the United States in 1875, is renowned for its sweeping melodies and powerful orchestral themes. Pianist Mo Xu will perform the work.

Clarinetist Alan Schaffer will take the stage for Copland’s Clarinet Concerto, a piece known for its intimate orchestration and jazz-influenced second movement, originally written for Benny Goodman.

Rounding out the program, pianist Alan Murray will perform Rachmaninoff’s First Piano Concerto, a composition that echoes Tchaikovsky’s influence while showcasing the composer’s technical virtuosity and grand lyricism.

“This concert gives us the unique opportunity to witness musical history unfold,” Ger said. “We hear the evolution of the concerto form and the ongoing dialogue between orchestra and soloist—sometimes harmonious, sometimes dramatic.”

Tickets are available at ewburghsymphony.org or by calling 845-913-7157. Prices range from $10 for students with ID to $80 for balcony seating. Senior ($35) and general admission pricing ($55) is also available. Seating in the balcony is not handicap accessible.

A snow date is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, at 4 p.m.
