Walden to celebrate Christmas in the Square

The good Lord provided a perfect day for the Walden Rotary Club to hold their Annual Adopt-a-Coat event on November 21. Over 200 people attended and received warm coats, hats, gloves, socks, groceries, gift certificates and more.

Thanks also to #TOM STRONG and the Business Council of Greater Montgomery; Bliss Water Service; the Wallkill Valley Times; Walden P. D. Officer Bobby Montanero and Officer McGruff, the Crime Fighting Dog. I also take the liberty of sending a very special “thank you” to Walden Rotary’s Co-Committee of this special event: Mike Bliss; Keith Hunter and Peter Sullivan.
They truly inspire the spirit of the holiday season.

Christmas is in the air. Take a drive down Main Street to see the holiday wreaths on the light poles! Be sure to visit the beautiful Christmas tree in Village Square donated in memory of Edward and Lilli Melville, Mom and Dad of Barbara, Edward, Dolores, Lisa.

Mike Bliss, Parks and Recreation Director sincerely thanks the entire Melville Family; Dwight Warrington, owner of C Camp Commercial Services; Fred Perna and his Public Works Crew; Walden P. D.; the Walden Fire Department and all involved. Christmas in the Square will be held on Thursday, December 3.
Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. with caroling by the Fox Hill Community. Freedom Road Bible Church will present a live nativity at 6:50 p.m. New York School of Music will present Christmas carols at 7:10 p.m. Santa will arrive at 7:30 p.m. to light the tree. After the event all are welcomed at St. Andrew’s Hall for free photos with Santa. Distance guidelines will be followed.
Everyone is required to wear a mask.

The Fox Hill Community, 80 Coleman Road,sends Merry Christmas greetings and invites you to join them for a Drive-Through Nativity and Carol Sing-Along on Friday, December 11, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
As you leave, share a prayer or a wish and they will light a candle on a tree for you. In case of bad weather call 778-7561 for an update.

The Village of Walden will hold their annual Home Decorating Contest sponsored by the Community Council. To join in, you must reside in Walden. Pick up and drop off an entry form at the Josephine-Louise Public Library by December 16. Local business gift certificate prizes will be awarded for 1st place $100; 2nd place $75 and 3rd place $50. Judging will be based on creativity, originality and artistic endeavors! Winners will be notified by phone or in person by December 21, 2020.

The Town of Montgomery Food Pantry continues to prepare bags/baskets for holiday dinners. The following food items are needed: canned carrots, peas, green beans, corn, mixed vegetables; instant mashed potatoes; rice; applesauce; canned soups; stuffing mixes.
Food items may be dropped off at the Food Pantry, 2200 Route 208, Montgomery on Monday and Tuesday evenings, 6-7 p.m. If the donation is a large quantity and you require assistance, please call Karena Winum at 845-857-3861.

St. Mary’s Cemetery, 105-109 Railroad Avenue, Montgomery has put up a holiday Wishing Tree thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Sheen whose son is buried in the baby’s section of the cemetery.

The tree is located on the main road of the cemetery all the way down on the right. The tree is on the left hand side. You are invited to write your wishes on cards provided that are attached to the tree. Cards and pens are located on a stand next to the tree. Please keep the pen.
On Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 7 p.m. the cards will be burned. May all your wishes come true.

The Walden Humane Society, 2489 Albany Post Road, Walden will hold their next indoor yard sale on Saturday, December 5, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Face masks are required. Great place to shop for the holidays. Keep in mind all proceeds benefit the care of the animals at the shelter.
For information call the shelter at 778-5115. You also might want to bring a donation of food or cleaning supplies. Thank you for your support.

A great holiday gift solution is to participate in Walden Community Council’s annual Fundraiser - the 2021 Lottery Calendar! For a $20.00 donation you have a chance to win $25 daily/$40 on Sunday/$75 on Holidays. No drawing on Christmas Day. $100 - New Year’s Eve. Lottery cards are available at the Josephine-Louise Public Library or by calling Anita at 778-7772 or Jean at 778-1602. Hurry to get the number you want.

The Josephine-Louise Public Library sends the following news:
We have new Grab n’ Go Kit packets for your little ones during the month of December. This week we have Penguins Big Adventure kits, based on the story by Salina Yoon. The week of 12/7 will include themes of Hanukkah and Christmas.
The week of 12/14 we will offer crafts for all ages such as Wooden Ornament craft, a Beaded Candy Cane Creation and a Winter Globe kit. All of the kits will have the materials you need and the instructions to create your craft. Give us a call at 778-7621.
Have you opened your Hoopla account yet? This is a free library streaming service for Walden patrons. As of December we have increased the monthly number of items you can stream from 5 to 8. Simply click on the “Hoopla” picture on your website - www.waldenpubliclibrary.org. A you need is a library card and an e-mail address. It’s as simple as that!
At the time of this writing, the Village of Walden area is not in a color-coated Covid-19 zone. The library will continue to offer in-house services with 30 minute appointments.The number of people in the library is strictly enforced, Please be aware that if our area enters into an Orange or Red Zone, we may have to go back to curbside service. We will not completely shut down, but will restrict our in-house library visits. Staff will be in the building to answer calls, fill requests and assist as best we can.
