Walden couple claims $7 million lottery prize

Posted

Deborah and Jon Hansen received their check from the New York Lottery at Stewart’s Shops in Walden last Wednesday. They won the $7 million CASH4LIFE jackpot prize on Sept. 12.

Jon purchased the lottery ticket at the Stewart’s Shops in Walden. The couple chose to split their one-time lump sum payment. Each will receive a net check totaling $2,351,300 after required withholdings. During his interview with Yolanda Vega of the New York Lottery on Wednesday, Jon noted that the day he won the lottery was just like any other.

“I didn’t feel especially lucky,” he said. “I woke up, went to work, came home, got into the house and was told I had to get milk.”

While purchasing the milk at Stewart’s, Jon bought his CASH4LIFE ticket. That evening, he placed the ticket on the refrigerator and went to bed without watching the drawing on television. The next day, Deborah saw a post on Facebook claiming that a Walden resident had won the lottery. She saw the ticket on the refrigerator and could not believe her eyes.

“He’s pulling my leg,” she said. “How does he know my numbers?”

Deborah continued to verify the numbers on the ticket. When Jon got home, she screamed to him that they had won. Jon could not believe it either. After scanning the ticket and looking online, the couple confirmed that they had won the lottery. After that they called their loved ones, who were just as surprised as they were.

During the check presentation last Wednesday, Jon and Deborah told Yolanda Vega of the New York Lottery what they plan to do with their earnings. Deborah noted that she aims to use the money to travel. She plans to go to Hawaii and Bermuda. Jon will accompany his wife on her travels. In addition, they will make repairs to their home in Walden. Jon noted that he can now afford a sports utility vehicle he wanted. Both are excited to spend their winnings.

“I have this oversized check that’s going to help realize all those dreams and then some,” Vega said. “Congratulations to Jon and Deborah on their $7 million dollar win!”
