Village considers moratorium

During a combined meeting of the Village of Montgomery Board of Trustees and the Planning Board, Village officials spoke about considering a moratorium on building and proposed projects within the Village. “We’ve talked about this for a while. I think we need take a moment and pause to assess,” explained Mayor L. Stephen Brescia.

When discussing the proposed building of a warehouse and buildings near Weaver Street by residential housing, Mayor Brescia and Trustees spoke about how the new building, along with all new development in the Village, will impact that small community. The proposed project is KSH Industries LLC. which offers outdoor recreational equipment.

“I’ve said all along that this project concerned me more than Medline because it’s in the Village and truck traffic will be right here, the size, and impact on residents,” shared Brescia. Brescia went on to speak about the buffer between residents and the proposed property. “If it’s not too late maybe we should consider the moratorium now,” he said.

Currently, the proposed project is in the beginning stages with the Planning Board. Village Attorney Kevin Dowd shared, “The Planning Board right now is doing all of its due diligence to make the applicant comply with everything that needs to be complied with.” Major issues such as a traffic, drainage, wetlands and the airport being nearby are all being taken into consideration. Due to impacting people’s property rights, Dowd said typically you see a moratorium for 3-6 months with the possibility of renewing.

“You want to find out what’s the best fit for the Village of Montgomery and what will also keep the Village sustainable. You have to find that balance and the moratorium will give you that breathing room,” said Dowd.
