The wrestling season – shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic was reduced to one week and one sectional tournament.

Local teams, however, struggled in the tournament as the Valley Central Vikings finished seventh of eight teams after defeating the Pine Bush Bushmen, 48-15, on Saturday morning at Valley Central High School.

Each team won three of the six contested matches, but the Vikings beat the Bushmen on depth alone as they took advantage of the Bushmen’s lack of depth to rack up five forfeit victories to account for 30 of their 48 points.

The Vikings still outscored the Bushmen on the mat as they picked up pins at 110, 118 pounds and Richie Degon’s pin of Richie Urena at 132 pounds.

Randy Ortiz got Pine Bush on the scoreboard with a 6-2 victory over Nicolo Ricciuto at 126 pounds. The Bushmen also got pinfall victories from Devin Greer (152) and Dylan Burgos (172).

The format featured eight teams with two pools of four teams each.

The Vikings wrestled in Pool A and went 0-3, suffering losses to Cornwall, Minisink Valley and Goshen. The Bushmen went 0-3 in Pool B, suffering losses to Washingtonville, Warwick, and Port Jervis.

Minisink Valley and Port Jervis won their respective pools, and the Warriors won the tournament with a 64-6 win over Port Jervis.

Warwick took second beating Cornwall in criteria after the two teams wrestled to a 34-34 tie. The Wildcats won seven of the 13 bouts to seal the victory.

Washingtonville took fifth with a 42-30 win over Goshen.
