Trump’s constitutional negligence

Posted

In the preamble to our US Constitution one of the stated objectives or reasons for its establishment is to ‘ promote the General Welfare. ‘ The founding fathers realized it was paramount for our Republic to look out for and safeguard the well-being of its citizens. The Presidential oath of office contains the words,’ preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.’ At the onset and even in the midst of this raging Covid-19 pandemic endangering our nation’s public health, that constitutional objective has been given little regard by Trump ! Not only has he, for the most part, ignored the welfare of Americans, he has become the strident anti-science President undermining the credibility of our public health experts in their scientific data-driven mitigation guidance to combat this lethal pathogen; actually setting a national cavalier tone that shows a gross negligence in this coronavirus battle and failing miserably to lead by example.

If Trump wore a mask and encouraged his staunch supporters to follow suit, I am sure they would. American lives would be saved. Instead Trump refuses wearing a mask because in his mind it shows weakness. With Trump it’s all about optics and style, nothing of substance. Without reservation he puts American lives in peril. Much to my chagrin Trump is this pandemic’s greatest ally.
