Tree lighting has Shawangunk aglow

As the sun set on the town of Shawangunk on Sunday, the chill air was warmed with cheerful voices raised in song and the enthusiastic beats of a marching band.

People of all ages were crowded around the steps of the town hall for the annual lighting of the Christmas tree and holiday festivities.

“Story time brought a lot of people and little ones out,” said Town Supervisor John Valk.

The event was kicked off this year with a special story time and craft with Miss Tara of the Wallkill Public Library.

Donna Myer, president of the Vision of Wallkill, said there was a “huge turnout” and estimated there were about 40 children present.

Afterward, as everyone waited for the arrival of Santa, the crowd was treated to music from the Wallkill High School Madrigal Choir and the Walker Valley Marching Band with Tony Martino.

Finally, a fire truck arrived, and to the delight of the children watching, Santa climbed down from the truck to greet them. He then led the crowd in a countdown to light the tree, accompanied by cheers from the crowd.

Dana Dilorenzo, said her 9-month-old son, Michael, loved the band and became very excited when Santa arrived. She called the evening a “pretty special” event.

“My favorite part is when Santa arrives on the fire truck and the kids get all excited,” said Myer.

The fun didn’t stop there, however. The children rushed to line up to sit on Santa’s lap in his sleigh and whisper their Christmas wishes before having their photos taken. There were also crafts, face painting and refreshments provided by the Wallkill Woman’s Club.

The event also held its very first gingerbread house decorating contest, where residents brought in their houses and competed for bragging rights.

“Everyone works really well together and we couldn’t do this without their help,” said Myer.

Myer and Valk extended a special thanks to all those who donated, volunteered and performed to make the night a success, including the Wallkill Public Library, Wallkill Hook, Ladder & Hose, Wallkill Woman’s Club, Wallkill Lions Club, Wallkill High School National Honor Society, Wallkill High School Madrigal Choral Group, Walker Valley Marching Band, Tony Martino, Wallkill Body Shop & Glass, Olympic Electric, Town of Shawangunk, Tree Lighting Committee and Vision of Wallkill.

“It’s amazing what people can do when they get together,” said Valk.
The town’s menorah is also now on display and the lighting will begin on Dec. 22, the first night of Hanukkah, and continuing for the next seven nights.

Holiday spirit in the town continues with the Sparkle and Shine Holiday Decorating Contest. Residents and local business owners are encouraged to decorate their homes and businesses. Voting boxes will be up at the town hall and Wallkill Valley Federal Savings & Loan until Dec. 22. Winners will be announced at the town board meeting on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
