The Walden Sunshine Society continues to brighten lives.
This group was organized in 1896 by Cynthia Westover Alden, an editor for the Recorder, a New York City-based newspaper. The goal was to provide immediate help to flood and fire victims.
A local chapter was organized in 1896 in Walden under the leadership of Mary Knapp Hill. Throughout the years the society has met in members’ homes, at churches and in other local buildings. In Pre Covid time the Society held monthly meetings at the Walden Municipal Building. A key feature of this organization is its large inventory of medical equipment. Walkers, wheelchairs, knee walkers, rollators, crutches, canes, bath seats and commodes are loaned out, free of charge, for a three month period to those in need.
The group advertises its services through local church bulletins, medical facilities and news releases. Word of mouth referrals are still the neighborly way many people find out about the group’s charitable activities. Although the group is not currently holding monthly meetings, they continue to loan out equipment.New members are always welcome. No special invitation is needed.
Residents will find the Walden Sunshine Society an opportunity to help those in their community. For more information about Walden Sunshine call Anita at 778-7772; Sue at 778-3532 or Becky at 527-1221.
