Mary W. Cherry of Montgomery, a lifelong resident of the area, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2020 in Middletown.  She was 95.

The daughter of the late George Wilkinson and Maud Neely Wilkinson, she was born October 5, 1925 in Walden.

Mary graduated from Walden High School and went on to earn a BS and MS degree from SUNY at Potsdam, as a voice major.

Mary married Charles Cherry in 1963 and they enjoyed over forty years of happiness together, until his death in 2006.

Mary used her talents and education well, teaching music in the Balmville, Newburgh, and New Windsor school systems. In addition she taught piano, played the organ in many local churches and, as a lifelong member of the Walden First Reformed Church, sang in the choir for 75 years. She also assisted at the polls during the elections and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.

Mary was an avid golfer and bridge player. She played golf well into her eighties and played bridge two or three times a week, up until a couple of years ago. She also enjoyed square dancing with her husband and a trip to the casino.

Mary filled a room with laughter, singing, and fun. Her bubbly personality and optimism were contagious to all who knew her. She enjoyed having family and friends gather together and her cooking was legendary.

Mary’s motto was to “keep laughing, enjoy life, have a good sense of humor and keep music a part of it”. She said it had worked for her and was the best advice she could give the next generation.

Mary was predeceased by her son John (2004) and husband Charles (2006) and is survived by two nephews and three nieces.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in Mary’s name can be made to the First Reformed Church of Walden, 70 Scofield St., Walden, NY 12586.

Arrangements were made by Millspaugh Funeral Directors.
