The Village of Montgomery has a rich history and it appears that some of its former residents remain in the town as spirits. Former Town of Montgomery historian Robert Williams led a candlelit ghost tour on Saturday night, which gave a narrative of accounts of unexplained events.

The tour began at the Borland House, a restaurant and inn built in 1789. It is so haunted that there was a book written about it. “Ghost Investigator Volume 8: Back into the Light” by Linda Zimmerman contains a section about the establishment. Every psychic and paranormal investigator who has visited the house has felt the presence of Henry Hintz, who owned the house in the early 1900s. His spirit cares deeply about the house and expresses sadness when renovations are made. Many people have had experiences with a spirit on the bottom floor. This is the ghost of someone who died from cutting themselves with an axe in the early 1900s. The spirit warns people to be careful with axes.

Spirits also haunt City Winery, which was previously known as Worsted Mill. One ghost of an employee at the mill was seen there evaluating equipment. In addition, the ghost of the mill’s bookkeeper, John Crabtree was seen.

Ghost sightings have occurred at the nearby Crabtree House. A worker saw two spirits while renovating the place. Several people have stated that they have seen ghosts in the attic of the house.

Union Street has been littered with ghost sightings. The spirit of an old man with a Panama hat was seen in front of the former Smith Tavern. Williams crossed paths with the supernatural while living in one of the houses on the street. His late wife heard footsteps and he heard dishes being moved. There was one instance when his late wife lost her balance while using a step ladder and she felt a spirit’s hands push her to regain balance. People have also seen the ghosts of friars by St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Williams notes that these ghosts are friendly, much like Casper.

“These are people coming to check up on us,” Williams said. “I never feel intimidated when I go into a place.”
