Gardiner town board extends tourism moratorium

The Gardiner town board extended a six-month moratorium on the processing of approvals for new applications for tourism-related facilities.

The moratorium, which would have ended June 13, will be extended to December 21.

The moratorium prohibits new applications after Nov. 13, 2018 for camps, low-impact recreation, recreational camps and facilities, lodging facilities, resorts, tourist camps, travel trailer parks and glamping facilities.

The moratorium will allow the town to review the tourism-related uses defined in the zoning law and town code which regulates “tourist camps” and “travel trailer parks” and update or revise these definitions to ensure tourism-related accommodations are located and built in a way that will not adversely impact the town’s residents or the environment.

Town Supervisor Marybeth Majestic said the town board requires more time to amend the zoning code, however the extension could end before six months.

“Our hope is that we do not have to go for a full six-month extension,” Majestic said.

The town board unanimously overrode the Ulster County planning board’s recommendation to not extend the moratorium.
