Feller named Town of Montgomery Deputy Supervisor

Posted

Shortly after the Montgomery Town Board was sworn into office, Town Supervisor Brian Maher named Councilman Ronald Feller his deputy supervisor. His appointment became official at the town reorganization meeting on Jan. 2.

According to the New York State Senate, in the absence or inability to act as the supervisor, or while the office of the supervisor is vacant, the deputy supervisor shall preside, when present, at the meeting of the town board and shall be vested with all of the powers and perform all of the duties of the supervisor.

Maher named Feller his deputy supervisor because he has a tremendous amount of experience in business, municipal government and service to our country as a veteran. Feller is a 46-year resident, who served on the town board from 2008 to 2011 and as deputy supervisor from 2011 to 2012. He is also the former Parks and Recreation Director from 2015 to 2017.

He is also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Maybrook Chapter, a current coach and past board member of the Montgomery Little League and a distribution board member of the Community Foundation of Orange.

Maher added that he chose Feller because the pair have a strong working relationship over the past 10 years. During Maher’s time as Walden mayor, Feller was always someone he could turn to for advice. He admires Feller because he is always interested in helping others and he often offers a different perspective, as the pair come from two different generations.

“My generation could learn a lot from past generations and I can honestly say I have learned a lot from people like Ron and Senator Larkin as I have continued in my public service sector,” Maher said. “Together we have a combination of new energy and institutional knowledge that will produce a positive result for our town.”

Feller noted that it is an honor and a privilege to be named deputy supervisor. During his time on the town board, he plans to build a parks program again for the maintenance of town parks and creation of recreation programs. He also would like to create summer and youth recreation programs. Feller also noted that he would like to control spending and keep taxes low in the face of growing development in the town.

He believes that the town has a lot on its plate but has taken the right steps to complete those tasks. Among those tasks are deciding on whether or not to pass a moratorium on warehouses and updating the town’s comprehensive plan. So far Feller is satisfied with how the board has handled their business.

“I think we got a lot of stuff accomplished...,” Feller said regarding the new town board. “We’re trying to get things done in a timely manner.”

Maher is excited for Feller’s tenure as deputy supervisor.

“My hopes for Ron’s tenure as deputy supervisor is for him to constantly tell me what I need to hear as opposed to what I want to hear,” Maher said. “I want us to challenge each other to maximize every single taxpayer dollar spent. Over the next few years Ron and I plan to establish a sustainable recreation department and get creative on how to generate more revenue through all of our town departments.”
