Take a musical journey back to the Baroque when Newburgh Chamber Music presents REBEL, one of North America’s top-tier ensembles, on Feb. 9.
The concert begins at 3 p.m. at St. George’s Church, 105 Grand St., in Newburgh. Tickets are available at the door or online at newburghchambermusic.org.

This is a return engagement for REBEL (pronounced Re-BEL), having performed for Newburgh Chamber Music in 2017. The program will include selections by Handel, Vivaldi, Corelli, and other composers of the 16th and 17th centuries, performed on period instruments. The group includes violinists Jörg-Michael Schwarz and Karen Marie Marmer, cellist John Moran, and harpsichordist Dongsok Shin.
Named after the innovative French Baroque composer Jean-Féry Rebel (1666-1747), the ensemble was formed in The Netherlands in 1991. That same year it took first prize in the Van Wassenaer International Competition in Utrecht and gave its critically-acclaimed American début in New York City in 1992.
Since then the ensemble has garnered an impressive international reputation, enchanting diverse audiences with their unique style and highly expressive and provocative approach to the baroque and classical repertoire. The core formation of two violins, recorder/traverso, cello/ viola da gamba and harpsichord/organ/fortepiano expands with additional strings, winds, brass, theorbo and vocalists, as needed.
Arguably the most aired American baroque ensemble in the U.S. today, REBEL has been hailed by the New York Times as “sophisticated and beguiling” and praised by the Los Angeles Times for its “astonishingly vital music-making.” The ensemble is regularly featured on the nationally syndicated shows Performance Today and Sunday Baroque, and has recorded more than 20 CDs on a variety of labels.
Since 2013 the ensemble has been in residence at the Downtown Music at Grace series in White Plains, NY, and maintains a self-produced concert series in Bedford, NY, now entering its twentieth season.
