Dominic "Nick" J. Winum of Stanley, VA, died in the line of duty, February 26, 2021, in Stanley, VA. He was 48.

Nick was born in Newburgh, NY on August 31, 1972 to Laurence and Jean Winum.  He married the love of his life, Kara, on August 6, 1994 and together they raised their four children. Nick was a successful tomato farmer on the Eastern Shore of VA before following his calling to become a police officer.  The first ten years of his law enforcement career were spent with the Virginia State Police.  In 2016, Nick joined the Stanley Police Department where he served his community for the remainder of his life.  Nick was also known for his ammunition and “dummy round” business.

Nick loved the Lord, his family, and his country.   As a man of honor and principles, Nick always stood up for what he believed in, and everyone knew that they could count on him when it mattered most.  Nick raised the bar on what it means to be a man.  His impact on this world will forever be seen through the men that are better fathers, husbands and Christians because his example and mentorship.  That contagious smile will forever be fondly remembered by those that knew him

In honor of this great patriot, we carry on his legacy of kindness, compassion and service to others.

Along with his parents, Nick leaves behind his wife, Kara Winum; children, Jedediah Winum, Aubrey Rountree (Carter), Jackson Winum, and Nicki Winum; granddaughter Willa Rountree; siblings, Laura Christiantelli (Frank), Larry Winum (Ellen), Nat Winum (Karin), Monique Martindale-Winum, Jarret Winum (Jessica), Karena Winum, Karl Winum (Betsy), and Brant Winum (Heather); 24 nieces and nephews and a loving extended family.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 3, 2021, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Bethlehem Independent Christian Church, Kite Hollow Rd., Stanley, VA 22851.

A funeral service will take place Thursday, March 4, 2021, at 2:00 PM at the Luray Bulldog Field, 740 US-340, Luray, VA 22835.

Out of respect for the family, it is requested that burial take place privately.
