While we are in the midst of the Coronavirus, we are also facing more and more dramatic evidence that global warming is another threat worsening as we search for a vaccine for the virus.

The strengthening of hurricanes as they gather in the Caribbean, the touch-down of tornadoes in the Northeast and the wild fires out of control on the west coast all originate from humans putting more Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases such as methane into the atmosphere. Is there a preventative measure that can address this second- just as serious threat- to our well-being and that of the planet?

Fortunately, New York State has stepped forward to address our warming world with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019. Within our own communities, we now have a Climate Smart Community Program that recognizes and rewards village, town, city and county governments for reducing greenhouse gases and implementing clean energy.

The Town of Montgomery is now working on the identified Ten High Impact actions that will improve air quality, create jobs and reduce energy costs. The Town Conservation Advisory Council is also part of the Climate Smart Task Force which was formed to help implement some of these programs.

One project launched in the midst of the restrictions of Covid 19 is the HeatSmart OrangeNY campaign sponsored by NYSERDA. This program offers homeowners a chance to install clean heating/cooling systems through heat pumps that provide 100% of heating/cooling needs for this climate. It also offers free home energy assessments. The Valley Central High School Environmental Club has added their support to educate and invite public participation.

Next Sunday, at Benedict Farm Park from 1:30 to 4:30 there will be a Climate Smart Expo that includes heat pump installers, a mini- Repair Cafe and some environmental activities and displays with the Conservation Advisory Council. It will also be a chance to celebrate the fall in a beautiful setting next to the Wallkill River.
