Highland’s Erica Angelillo came within 22 seconds of returning to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.

Running neck-and-neck with teammate Alexandra Carey during the entire Section 9 Class C championship race on Wednesday at Bear Mountain State Park, Angelillo was the sixth runner to cross the finish line not from team champion James I. O’Neill and was denied a return trip to states in her senior year.

Angelillo finished with a time of 22:54.3 and Carey was 14th overall in 23:07.2, as the Huskies finished third in the section with 103 total points. The Raiders were the meet champions with 15 points.

The Huskies placed three runners in the top 20 as sophomore Erin Smith was 19th. Violet Brienza was 27th and Delainey Reid took 33rd.

The boys didn’t have any one close to a state berth as Basil Metz finished 20th, leading the Huskies to a fifth-place finish with 157 points. The James I. O’Neill Raiders won the team championship with 25 points.
