Stewart passenger numbers decline

Norwegian Air and other airlines at Stewart served 277,682 passengers in 2019 so far, according to figures given by airport business development director manager Micheal Torelli at Tuesday’s Stewart Airport Commission meeting.

That’s a decline in recent months, which Torrelli attributed to the suspension of Boening 737 jets because of two crashes involving foreign carriers.

Passenger levels jumped with the arrival of Norwegian, with total numbers of passengers year to date going to 227, 682 from 17,061 in 2016 when Norwegian arrived.

Meanwhile, Torelli said work is on schedule to construct the $12-million-dollar federal inspection station by 2020 that will make Stewart a full service international airport.

Also underway is construction of a $5.7-million dollar solar powered parking lot canopy, a long-time goal of the Port of New York and New Jersey and Stewart.

The anticipated completion date for the planned airport construction for the 20,000 square foot federal inspection station is 2020 the airport officials said.

Torelli said air cargo at Stewart is best since 2016. They went from 3,362 tons in 2016 to to 13,413 tons in 2019.
