Power outage delays NFA swim meet

The Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 1 championship meet took longer to complete than originally planned.

A power outage at Newburgh Free Academy’s main campus on Friday night at the conclusion of the 200-yard freestyle relay forced the postponement of the meet’s last three events to Saturday morning at Washingtonville High School.

The Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks, who were leading the championship meet after nine events on Friday, finished on top to win the OCIAA Division 1 championship on Saturday.

The Goldbacks only had one first-place finish, the 200-yard freestyle relay, and also were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

“I think we swam OK,” Newburgh coach Zach Williams said. “I think it’s where we should be according to our plan. Division 1, teamwise, is a little smaller, but there’s some legit swimmers here. So, for my guys to hang in there and do it in more of a team effort, and just rack up those points, we’re pretty proud of that.”

Williams also was proud, and thankful for the way Friday night’s power outage was handled.

There were still swimmers in the pool when the power went out, but they were able to finish the race. The poolside timers were able to record the final times and Newburgh Enlarged City School District personnel safely got everyone out of the school.

“NECSD security and support staff and our custodial staff is the best in the business,” Williams said. “They were off the chart and they did an amazing job, and they don’t get enough credit, I think, sometimes.”

Then there came the issue of where to complete the meet. Even though power was returned by early Saturday morning, there were no guarantees on Friday night. The meet moved to Washingtonville High School, which hosted the Division 2 championships on Friday.

Williams also thanked Washingtonville coaches Jim Frisbie and Dan Wargo for opening their doors to the other division on the coldest morning of the winter.

“It takes a lot to even open your doors for a meet like this, and those guys did a lot for Division 1 and myself to make sure this happened,” he said.

The freestyle relays did best, as the team of Aiden Domanico, Jackson Gerbes, Angelo Reade and Jack Mummery posted a 1:35.30 for the win. The Goldbacks’ 400-meter relay team was 2 seconds off the pace, as Gerbes, Reade, Peyton Tuttle and Mummery took second.

There was only a four-team diving field with three divers hailing from Newburgh. Cole Mullarkey finished on top with an 11-dive score of 304.65 on Thursday.

The 200-yard medley relay team was fifth.

Mummery and Tuttle were fourth and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle. They took sixth and fifth respectively in the 500. Domanico and Jackson Cooper were fifth and sixth in the 200-yard individual medley. Domanico was seventh in the 100-yard butterfly. Gerbes was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle, with Cooper and Reade taking seventh and eighth respectively. Jax Pagano was 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

“I think it’s good,” Williams said. “It’s not the ultimate goal of NFA swimming. We have our eyes set on Section 9 championships, but I was telling the guys all week if you’re going to show up at a swim meet, you want to win it. Any time we get in the pool, we want to win.”
