A city of Newburgh woman was killed Saturday evening, in a two-car crash in the Town of Cornwall.

On July 17, 2021 at approximately 8:30 p.m., state police from the Montgomery barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash on State Route 32 in the town of Cornwall. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2009 Toyota Corolla, being operated by Helen Rivera, 38, from the City of Newburgh was traveling south when she crossed into the northbound lane and struck a 2010 Dodge Journey. The Journey was being operated by Catherine Swartz, 32, of Highland Mills.

Rivera was the sole occupant of the Corolla and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Dodge Journey was occupied by nine individuals. The operator of the Journey along with two passengers were transported to Westchester Medical Center. The remaining passengers were transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital with minor injuries.

This investigation remains ongoing and updates will be provided when available.
