American Legion Auxiliary hosts poppy poster contest

Posted

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit #124 recently organized its second annual Poppy Poster Contest in our community, aimed at enlightening residents about the significance and historical context of the poppy.

Gratitude is extended to Ryan Lawyer, Anishbell Brennan, Debra Clinton, Demian Stanmyer, Jena Thomas, and Sarah Amodeo for their support in promoting the contest within their respective schools.

A special acknowledgment is reserved for the District Art Department, including Christine Williams, Marc Eckert, Rachel Burroughs, Megan Albright, and Amy Trembly, whose efforts were pivotal in encouraging and guiding student participation.

The contest culminated in the recognition of winners Evelyn Beck (ES) and Alexandra Reilly (HS), the latter achieving victory for the second consecutive year. Each winner will receive a $25 prize, and their entries have been forwarded to the state-level competition. The twenty-four additional submissions were returned to the student artists with heartfelt letters of appreciation. A warm thank you is extended to all participants.

Marie Toombs chaired the Poppy Poster Contest, with judging conducted by Auxiliary members Kathleen Corrado, Eileen Hoey, June Jennison, along with veterans Bill Belton, Bernie Cunningham, Bob Follan, Ozzie Follan, Judy Husted, Vincent Mayer, Rick Palermo, Art Tabasco, and Legion Commander Ed Timberger.

As Memorial Day approaches, the community is urged to honor veterans by purchasing a poppy.

School News/Events
The Marlboro High School chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) celebrated its recent induction ceremony on April 24, warmly welcoming a new cohort of outstanding students. These inductees were recognized for their exceptional academic achievements, maintaining grade point averages of 90 percent or higher, in addition to demonstrating exemplary citizenship and commitment to community service.

Following the ceremony, a student-produced tribute video bid farewell to graduating NHS seniors, featuring a slideshow and self-made videos from each senior’s chosen inspirational teacher. The farewell, blending humor and sentimentality, reflected the profound bonds forged between students and educators throughout their high school journeys. Congratulations to all the inductees on their well-deserved recognition.

Parent/Teacher Conferences were scheduled throughout the District on Monday, April 29, and Tuesday, April 30. Consequently, Elementary School students did not have classes on April 29, while Middle and High School students had a half-day.
