Many new faces for Newburgh girls’ track

Posted

There’s going to be a lot of inexperience on the Newburgh Free Academy girls’ indoor track team this season, as the Goldbacks’ top competitors have graduated, leaving a young core behind.

The Goldbacks have lost Angelisse Diaz, who broke the school record in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet, and Sania Kuylen who reached the state meet in the 300-meter dash, and the 4x200-meter relay. She also set a school record in the 300-meter dash and made it to the finals during the indoor state meet, where she eventually finished 12th. Kuylen also made the Rising Stars 200 with her 300-meter time, and the 4x200 team also made Rising Stars.

However, Diaz and Kuylen are gone, along with Sydni Bangari, Donasia Cheatham, Sara McMurtrie and Amanda Waite.

There are plenty of returning athletes including, Milan Brooks, Esther Celestin, Jaslene Cheatham, Amaya Cruz, Denisha Cruz, Mia Davis, Isabella Delgado, Iman Flavius, Ava Forbes, Victoria Frazier, Riley Geis, Aaliyah Gilcrist, Rushika Latty, Jada Moody, Kwarojuok Omot, Inez O’Shea, Mary Jane Politi, Katerina Rainato, Crishanae Smith, Jessiah Smith, Savannah Smith, Alexandra Swink, Emma Waite, Hannah Walsh, Lauren White, Alyssa Worrell.

They’ll mix with a large group of newcomers: Gloria Aduloju, Kerrasia Alexander, La’Maya Atkins, Crystal Beauford, Annette Berry, Chimorah Black, Aalyiah Brooks, Ladaliah Burrell, Elizabeth Celestin, Madison Foti, Kiera Gomez, Samaya Lassic, Peython Lyken, Jimeiris Morales, Leila Pazos, Jordan Prescott, Gabrielle Robles, Diosmari Rodriguez, Ariyana Rosado, Julese Smith, Diarrah Stapes, Evangely Torres, Samantha Waite.

Many of these athletes started the season by running their first track meet ever, and some of them will be run at the NYC Armory for the first time this season.

Despite the inexperience, Newburgh coach Kathi Workman said she is looking forward to a great season.

“We are starting the season with a large team,” she said. “Many athletes have never run rack before, and others have never participated in a sport before. The season is already off to a great start with girls breaking their previous (personal records).”
