Loss doesn’t dampen NFA’s tournament prospects

The regular season didn’t end the way the Newburgh Free Academy boy’s basketball team wanted it to.

The Goldbacks’ seniors had their final home game of the season spoiled by a 46-44 loss to the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders on Friday at Newburgh Free Academy.

The loss does not, however, deny the Goldbacks the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I championship, which they won with a 4-2 divisional record, one game ahead of the Middletown Middies.

Jayden Desir led the Crusaders with 13 points, and Jankarlos Mendoza added 11 points for the Crusaders.

Deondre Johnson led the Goldbacks with a game-high 17 points and Aidan Brown added 13 for the Goldbacks.

The Goldbacks will now wait to see where they fall when the seeds for the Section 9 Class AA are announced on Thursday. Despite their division championship, their bid for the No. 1 seed could be complicated by two losses to OCIAA Division II champion Valley Central.

The Goldbacks opened last week with an 89-47 win over the Pine Bush Bushmen, with five players scoring in double figures. Johnson led the Goldbacks with a game-high 17 points and Jaydan Lorenzo added 12. Brown scored 13 points, while Tajir Walker and Darryl Jackson added 11 each.

The sectional tournament seeds will be announced on Thursday with sectional play scheduled to begin on Saturday. Seven teams - Newburgh, Middletown, Monroe-Woodbury, Kingston, Valley Central, Warwick and Washingtonville have qualified for the tournament.
