The Highland High School varsity girls basketball team went up against Rondout Valley this past Friday, losing 48-34.

The Huskies introduced their usual starters: freshman Katie Dauenheimer and Emma Thompson, and juniors Adrianna Scalo, Icis Roman and Dehana Stevens. For the Ganders, sophomores Magnolia Flamhaft and Azure Jones hit the court, with seniors Darrian Slater, Bella Ruzzi and Lena Frumenti.

Rondout earned possession immediately at tip-off, after a jump ball center court set the scene for this intense game.

Dauenheimer hit a three at 6:17, and freshman shooting guard Addie McDowell is consistent with dropping threes, as her first of the night came at 3:26. Flamhaft hit a foul shot and Jones tallied two at 3:12, answering the Huskies. Frumenti sunk two at 2:11 and freshman guard Maddie Malak added another two at 4:35. The Ganders were leading 7-6.

Eighth grade point guard Grace Koehler started off the second quarter with a 3-pointer at 7:30, followed by two from Thompson at 6:31. Malak sunk a free throw for the Ganders, and then turnover after turnover began. For about three minutes, both teams consistently tried to score, but either sides defense held them back.

Malak started the run for the Ganders, earning a 3-pointer at both 3:47 and 3:12, upping their momentum. McDowell answered with another of her classic 3-pointers at 1:32, but Ruzzi came in with her own three at 1:18. Malak finished the quarter with two more points with eight seconds remaining. The Huskies trailed 19-15 going into the half.

Slater hit a 3-pointer for Rondout at 6:54, and earned two free throws which she sunk with ease. Stevens and Thompson each earned two free throw shots, but each only sunk 1-2. Scalo took matters into her own hands, grabbing rebound after rebound until finally earning a 3-pointer at 4:54. Ruzzi answered with two at 4:30, and Slater hit another 3-pointer at 4:05.

Dauenheimer, who was frustrated with consistent foul calls from both sides of the court, earned her day at the foul line, sinking both of her shots. Dauenheimer sunk another two at 2:25 before Stevens, who then earned two at 2:32. Flamhaft hit a layup at 2:07, but was fouled in the paint, thus earning another point from the free throw line.

Stevens earned two foul shots, but fell short, whereas Koehler redeemed points for the Ganders by sinking both her foul shots following Stevens. Malak ran to the net for the Ganders, earning two at 1:09, while Slater followed behind with a 3-pointer with only 39 seconds remaining in the quarter. Ruzzi was fouled with 22 seconds remaining, where she went 1-2 at the line. Rondout was now ahead 38-27, but the Huskies haven’t given up yet.

Slater began the fourth quarter sinking two free throws, but with the Huskies behind, they knew they couldn’t give away any free shots, thus they called a timeout at 7:23. Flamhaft followed behind Slater with a 3-pointer at 5:59.

Highland decided to push back harder, as Stevens hit two easy layups in the paint at 5:23 and 3:02. Roman earned her one and only point of the game with 1-2 at the free throw line, but Stevens again scored another two with one minute remaining.

With forced fouls within the last minute, the Ganders earned five free throw points to close out the quarter. The Highland Huskies were defeated 48-34.
The Huskies are back at home on Friday, Jan. 31 against the S.S. Seward Institute.
