Handsome Devil BBQ opens in Newburgh

After two and a half years of searching for a perfect location and seven months of construction and preparation, Ed Randloph’s Handsome Devil BBQ has opened over the weekend in Newburgh.

Randolph grew up in the Hudson Valley and has been residing in Newburgh for the last fifteen years. Coming from an agricultural family and always cooking for a lot of people, he realized that he wanted to make it his career.

Despite his father pushing him to be an accountant – which he did for over 20 years – he realized he ought to follow the advice he kept telling his daughters, which was to follow their dreams.

“As I got older, I gravitated towards cooking over an open flame,” said Randolph. “There was something about it that was a challenge. You’ll never get the same cook twice because of things like the weather or wood.”

Each of these different variables, including different types of meat, make barbecue different than any other kind of cooking for Randolph.

When he first kicked off his barbecue career, it wasn’t in Newburgh. Despite his Hudson Valley roots, Randolph has travelled far and wide for different barbecue events, shows and festivals. He has participated in a number of competitions and has won a “fair share of competitions,” including six state titles.

“I always wanted to share what we’ve learned on the road with our hometown,” said Randolph. “Everything we do … we take Hudson Valley with us.”

Now the opportunity to share everything he learned on the road is finally happening. The 5,000-square foot restaurant captures the authentic barbecue joint feel that Randolph felt was missing from Newburgh.

“When you walk in you think you’re anywhere from the Carolinas to central Texas,” said Randolph. “That’s what we’re going to give people.”

The restaurant’s three barbecue smokes have been brought in from Texas, a cutting line that could be found in Texas, fine-grain meat that comes from Omaha, Nebraska and Wichita, Kansas.

Everything is made directly in house.
“Everything is top of the line,” said Randolph. “It’s kind of like a craft steakhouse but on the barbecue side. You’ll smell the wood burn and think you’re not in Newburgh, New York but maybe Austin, Texas.”

Randolph’s favorite on the menu is the brisket, which he boasts will be one of the best in the area. They also have a range of sausages including a texas sausage and a jalapeno cheddar sausage. Their sides include southern delights like smoked collard greens, mac and cheese, cornbread and coleslaw. Desserts include a banana pudding, pecan hand pies, carrot cake and more. The restaurant isn’t shy on its pour with a bar filled with bourbons, tequilas and mezcals.

“I really want to give everyone something so that when they come here it feels like they’ve been at my home,” said Randolph. “That’s what barbecue is – it’s all about family and community.”

With opening during a pandemic, the Handsome Devil BBQ team has been preparing to make its customers feel as safe as possible. They will be ensuring social distancing, providing hand sanitizer and disinfecting the tables thoroughly between guests. The restaurant has 60 to 70 seats and guests will be spread out throughout.

“The reason I’m kind of glad we did open during a pandemic is because this place is filled with love and passion of your local community,” said Randolph. “This is the Hudson Valley. People went above and beyond to help us out. We’ve heard so much negativity in the past nine months of what’s closing and what we can’t do. It’s nice to have a place that can do.”

Their hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., or until food runs out. Randolph said he can “only make as much as his smokers hold in a day,” but looks forward to serving the community.
