Gustav Egon Hansen of Modena,  passed away peacefully Sunday, May 5, 2024. He was 87. 

Gus was born on April 23, 1937 in Wrixum auf Föhr, Germany, to the late Heinrich and Frieda (Petersen) Hansen.
He is predeceased by his brother Hermann Hansen (Germany).

Egon, as known by his family, was born and raised on the beautiful island of Föhr. He completed his apprenticeship at a young age and quickly began building homes in the timber frame style. He then emigrated to America. He served in the U.S. Army, 4th Infantry Division. He was a volunteer fireman with the Modena Fire Department for many years. As an amateur HAM radio enthusiast (N2KUD) he regularly communicated with people all over the world including the International Space Station.

Better known as a master craftsman and woodworker, there was nothing he couldn’t build. Working with wood was his lifetime enjoyment.

He was employed by Lawrence H. Morse Construction in Clintondale for several years. He attended New York State Department of Corrections Training Academy in Harriman, NY and became a Corrections Officer at Shawangunk Correctional Facility. He eventually retired from Wallkill Correctional Facility as a carpenter.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Kay Hansen (Modena), daughters Karen (Wallkill) and Susan (Wallkill), grandchildren Gustav and Juliane, sister Alma Maistrak (Werner) of Duisburg, Germany and many, many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 9, 2024, 4pm-6pm at Wallkill Funeral Home, 12 Bona Ventura Ave., Wallkill, NY 12589. 

A funeral service will take place Friday, May 10, 2024, 11 a.m., at the funeral home. Pastor Howard Dalton will officiate.

Cremation will take place privately.
