Gunshot fire next to Maybrook’s Main Line Diner & Pizza Company forced people to evacuate the restaurant on Thursday night.

Units of the Village of Maybrook Police Department, assisted initially by the Town of Montgomery Police Department, responded just before 6 p.m. to the area of 934 Homestead Avenue in the Village of Maybrook for a call of a suicidal subject.

Upon arrival of the officers, the subject in the premise fired one shot from a high-powered rifle into the bedroom ceiling. A determination was made to request a tactical response unit from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as well as assets from the New York State Police.

“Anytime you get a suspect that’s contained like that you want to use advanced resources,” said Investigator Stephen Ragni of the Town of Montgomery Police Department. “For the safety of the officers and the surrounding community.”

As restaurant diners evacuated, workers were told to hide in the kitchen.

After a period of negotiations with the individual, the subject voluntarily surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.

The subject, whose name is not being released, was transported to a medical facility for a mental health evaluation.

The Town of Montgomery Police Department reported that no injuries or fatalities resulted from this incident.
