The Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks were eliminated from the Section 9 Division 1 Duals wrestling tournament on Wednesday were defeated by the No. 6 Warwick Wildcats, 34-33 at Newburgh Free Academy.

Mateo Morell (170), Christopher Leggett (285), Cooper Merli (108) and Matthew Mercado picked up pinfall victories for the Goldbacks, who were the tournament’s third seed.

The tournament was originally scheduled to begin on Jan. 9 and end the next day, but the first day of the tournament was postponed. The Wildcats advanced to Tuesday’s semifinal and were expected to face the No. 2 Middletown Middies.

The Goldbacks opened the tournament with a 60-6 win over the unseeded Beacon Bulldogs. Morell (160), William Coughlin (190), Soto (101), Jordan Busby (116), James Corbett (116) and Ivan Duran (138) had pinfall victories for the Goldbacks.
