A second serious fire in a little more than a week has ripped through a Newburgh neighborhood, leaving people homeless.

On Monday, April 8, at 11:18 p.m. the City of Newburgh Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 59 Carter Street. Arriving units found the rear of 59 and 61 Carter Street fully involved with fire, which was spreading to the interior of the buildings. The duty Assistant Chief was first on scene and immediately sounded a 2nd alarm. Ladder 1 arrived, followed by Engine 3.

Crews stretched handlines into the interior of 59 and 61 Carter Street. The fire was darkened down and crews began searching for hidden fire at 12:22 pm. The fire was deemed under control just before 2 am. Twenty-four persons were displaced; the Red Cross responded to assist. The cause of the fire remains under investigation with the City of Newburgh Fire Investigation Team, but is not considered suspicious in nature.

The City of Newburgh FD was assisted at the scene by the City of Newburgh Police Department, the Cronomer Valley FD, Stewart Air Guard FD, West Point FD, Castle Point VA FD, Coldenham FD, Cornwall-on-Hudson FD, and Empress EMS. Crews remained on location until 7 a.m. to ensure the fire was extinguished. One City of Newburgh firefighter and one occupant received minor injuries and were taken to St. Lukes Cornwall Hospital ER.

This fire was right around the block from where another fire destroyed several apartment buildings on Lutheran Street on Easter Sunday. Thirty-three people were left homeless by that blaze.
