Elizabeth J. “Betty” Greene passed away on April 12, 2024.  Betty served the residents of the Town of Newburgh as the Receiver of Taxes Collector for 28 years and currently as Town Councilwoman.  

Her career spanned from working at S. Stroock & Co., Central Hudson and as the Court Clerk in the Town of Newburgh.  Throughout Betty’s career, she also held the positions of President of New York State Associations of Town (representing all 933 towns in all levels of government) and as President of the NYS Receivers and Tax Collectors Association. 

Betty was born on August 25th to Joseph and Mary (Corbett) Schultz growing up in the family home in New Windsor.  Betty spent her summers and wonderful times with her Godparents Joe and Hilda Corbett on the family farm in Montgomery.  She is predeceased by her sister former Orange County Clerk Marion S. Murphy (Joseph).   

She graduated from St. Patrick’s Girls School and Mount St. Mary Academy High School, having served as Alumni President.  Betty participated in her faith as a member of Orange County Catholic Club, where she met her husband 60 years ago – Don Greene.  She also served as the Leader of Song Music Coordinator, religious education co-teacher and as Parish Trustee at Sacred Heart Church.

Betty married the love of her life D. Donald Greene in 1965, having a daughter Mary Beth Greene-Krafft of Cornwall and son Dominick D. Greene (Courtney Canfield) of Newburgh.  Betty’s pride and joy are her grandsons Daniel, Ryan and Colin.  She is survived by her sister-in-law Rose Elston (Jerry) and nephews Jerry Jr, Charles and David.  She is also survived by her sister’s sons Tim and Tom Murphy.  Included in this loving matriarch’s family are 2 generations of nieces and nephews, all with a special place in her heart!  

Betty loved our community and was a true public servant; as the Town Councilwoman she was the liaison to many departments, the Town of Newburgh Ambulance Corp., Bureau of Fire Safety and the Recreation Department.  Also, serving as a life member of the Cronomer Valley Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, President of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 1420 and a member of the Town of Newburgh Republican Committee - Woman of Year 1996.

Betty was also active in many community organizations and non-for-profits, former President of the Leptondale Elementary School PTA, Cronomer Valley Jr. Marching Band, a board member of the McQuade Children’s Facility, Newburgh Day Nursery and volunteer of Women of Achievement YWCA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, American Cancer Society and many others.  

Betty’s love for others was never ending.  Her extended volunteer, government, church and community family will always be a cherished part of her heart!  

Arrangements by White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral Home, calling hours will be held at the Cronomer Valley Fire Department Hall, 296 N. Plank Rd, Newburgh on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 4 p.m.to 8 p.m.  

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2024 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Robinson Ave, Newburgh with Fr. William Scafidi officiating.  Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution may be made to the Town of Newburgh Ambulance Corp or Cronomer Valley Fire Department.
