Warming Center opens in Ulster

Posted

With parts of Ulster County expected to get between 8 to 18 inches of snow from Sunday into Monday, Ulster County Executive Pat Ryan announced the opening of the Ulster County Warming Center.

Located at 2nda Iglesia La Mision Church in the City of Kingston starting at 7 p.m., Saturday, November 30, the center will remain open 24 hours through 9 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4.

“As temperatures decrease ahead of our first major winter storm, we are encouraging residents in need of shelter to come to the Ulster County Warming Center,” Pat Ryan, Ulster County Executive said. “Additionally, I ask everyone to use extra precaution, make a winter emergency plan, and stay off the roads if possible.”

County Executive Ryan reminds residents to be prepared in their own homes and encourages everyone to:

  • Stay off the roads during and right after the storm to allow the State, County, Town and the City of Kingston DPW crews to do their job;

  • Have food and water on hand;

  • Have a battery-powered radio to keep informed of the status of the storm;

  • Have a flashlight and fresh batteries handy; and

  • Fill your tub with water as an added reserve.

The leading cause of death and injuries during winter storms is transportation-related accidents. If you must travel make sure that your vehicle is clear of ice and snow. Keep more distance between cars, be extra alert, and always match your speed to the road and weather conditions.

Hours of Operation for the Warming Center are as follows:

Evening Schedule - 7  p.m. through 9 a.m. the following day.

Daytime Schedule - 9  a.m. through 7 p.m.

The Ulster County Warming Center is operated by Catholic Charities and is located at the 2nda Iglesia La Mision Church, 80 Elmendorf St, Kingston NY 12401. The Warming Center can be contacted directly by phone at 845-481-4665.

Law Enforcement agencies or any other organization that come in contact with or becomes aware of any individuals that are in need of sheltering can bring them to the warming center.
