Ten students at the Marlboro Elementary School and ten students at the Marlboro Middle School participated in the first round of the National Geographic GeoBee school competition on January 31, 2020. 8th grade student, Matt D’Angelo, finished in 1st place while the 1st Runner Up was Holden West, and 2nd Runner Up was Yaseem Saleh. At the Marlboro Elementary School the 1st place winner was 5th grade student, Theresa O’Dell, while the 1st Runner Up was Keith Hillbrant and the 2nd Runner Up was Isabella Magyar.

The annual National Geographic GeoBee, is a geography competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world. Questions cover not only geography, but also ancient and world civilizations, cultures, and physical features.

The National Geographic Society developed the GeoBee in 1989 in response to concern about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people in the United States. Over more than three decades, more than 120 million students have learned about the world through participation in the GeoBee.

Ms. Robin Hecht, Director of Curriculum for the Marlboro Central School District, with the help of teachers, Mr. Geoffrey Pesano and Mrs. Kassia Messina organized the event. Support was also provided by Ms. Patricia Walsh, Marlboro Elementary Principal, Mrs. Dara Kaplan, Marlboro Elementary School Assistant Principal, Mrs. Debra Clinton, Marlboro Middle School Principal, and Mr. Demian Stanmyer, Marlboro Middle School Assistant Principal.

School champions, Matt and Theresa will take online qualifying tests. Up to 100 of the top test scorers in each state will then become eligible to compete in their State GeoBee. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C., for state winners to participate in the National Bee Championship rounds in Spring 2020. The first-place National Champion will receive cash prizes, scholarships and an all-expenses-paid trip by Lindblad Expeditions to Galapagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour II.
