Knights of Columbus host Veterans’ luncheon

The St. Charles Borromeo Knights of Columbus Council held its annual free lunch honoring local veterans at the St. Charles Borromeo Church Hall last Tuesday.

This is the third year the Knights of Columbus have organized this event. Prior to that, AARP hosted the gathering for seven years. The Knights of Columbus were motivated to carry on this tradition because roughly 1/4 of this particular chapter are veterans, several of whom are still active. One such veteran is Bill Freymann, the chapter’s grand knight, who served in the Air Force from 1960-65.

“A lot of us are veterans,” Freymann said. “We want to give back to the veterans.”

The veterans were treated to delicious foods such as macaroni and cheese, chicken parmesan as well as sausage and peppers. Raffles were held for gift cards to local businesses like Majestic’s Hardware and Hard Roll Deli. Even a basket of assorted pickles and several motor angels were raffled off.
Steve Agostini played and sung classics such as “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffett and “Bad Bad Leroy Brown” by Jim Croce. Veterans Richard Lay and Lenny Beaulieu provided keynote speeches thanking the veterans for their service. The veterans in attendance were grateful to be honored on Veterans Day.

“[The purpose of Veterans Day is] to honor those that didn’t come back,” said Ron Engelhard, who served from 1975-79. “And to honor the people that did serve.”
