Ezekiel Marin is an 11th grade student at NFA North. Although he doesn’t take Mayor Torrance Harvey’s social studies class, he loves going to see Harvey during his lunches and after and before classes. Inspired by Harvey and a desire to improve his community; Marin presented a list to Harvey during one of his many visits with suggestions to improve the city.

Dressed in one of his favorite suits, Marin presented his official list to the Newburgh City Council during Monday’s City Council meeting.

“This city is overrun by crime,” said Marin. “It’s unsafe for the children and children my age.” One of Marin’s biggest concerns is crime like cars speeding and potentially injuring children. “I am afraid of being hit by a car one day,” said Marin. “I don’t want that to happen.” As a result, Marin has suggested a larger police force.

“I want to make residents feel safe,” said Marin.

Marin also hopes to see more businesses enter the city. He wants to “have more money go around” the city. One of the more ambitious goals on the list was to build a skyscraper.

His presentation ended to smiles all throughout the council chambers.

“It’s really exciting for individuals who are way younger than those on the council be engaged,” said Councilwoman Karen Mejia on Marin’s presentation.
