State senate resolution honors Anita Manley

State Senator James Skoufis presented Anita Manley, mother of Town of Newburgh board member Scott Manley, with the New York State Senate Commendation Award at the most recent town board workshop meeting.

Manley was awarded for her contributions to the town as a human rights commissioner for the Orange County Human Rights Commission and in her other endeavors to advance human rights in the Town of Newburgh.

Manley also has served as a patient navigator for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, started the Friends of Seniors network in Newburgh to build relationships for the aging population, and is also the facilitator of Newburgh PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays)—having helped start a chapter in Newburgh.

“She provides a friendly face to people who otherwise may not see anybody,” he said. “She helped touch the lives of a great many people here in the Town of Newburgh and beyond.”

Skoufis joked that Manley’s greatest contribution has nothing to do with her human rights endeavors.

“Perhaps the most compelling reason to give this award to Anita Manley, is that she had to put up with Scott Manley,” he said.

Manley did not give a speech but posed for pictures with her son and Senator Skoufis.

In the past couple of months, Skoufis has presented the same award to Colin Jarvis, Newburgh Ministry’s Executive Director; and Paul Ernenwein, chairman of the Newburgh Illuminated Festival.
