An investigation by the City of Newburgh Police Department revealed the reason a young student brought a knife to school on April 8, which was confiscated by Community Resource Officer Humberto Perez. The student was fearful for his safety after being beaten and robbed by a large group of his peers.

The issues started on campus on April 3 at 2:30 p.m. when a group of 50 to 70 students crowded together on South Street and Robinson Avenue. The crowd was dispersed but eventually a fight broke out near St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital where the student was assaulted. The victim was still attending school, feeling unsafe he brought in the weapon as protection.

The police department arrested seven students for the incident two of which were under the age of 16. The five 17 year old students were charged with two counts of 2nd-degree robbery, which is a felony. The young men charged were Joseph V. Cotton, Percy N. Smith, Jaden D. Shelby, Mark A. Robinson, Jermaine Q. Robinson all residents of Newburgh. All 5 of the young men were booked, processed and held pending their arraignment on April 12, 2019.

The two minors were charged as adult offenders with two counts of 2nd-degree robbery as well. They will be processed in the Youth Part of County Court in Goshen.

Three of the boys were members of the NFA Varsity Football and Basketball teams.
