As I grow older, I tend to view the past through proverbial rose-colored glasses. The crumbling remnants of Newburgh’s architecture feed this impulse, but I have to say that the present day is looking better around here. When I arrived in Newburgh in 2007, the corner of Broadway and Liberty was a ruin. Over the past twelve years, this corner has slowly transformed into a more attractive crossroads in the heart of our city. After the Wherehouse (2009), Safe Harbors and the Cornerstone Residence led the way, and now the park – Safe Harbors Green – has become a safe and congenial meeting and event space. Across the street, the beautiful brick building at 96 Broadway is being restored to full glory, with lovely brickwork and splendid soffits, corbels, and trim moldings – an architectural gem reborn! Many other historic structures on Liberty Street and elsewhere in the historic district are being brought back with similar care and attention to detail. Thanks to the pioneers – keep up the good work!
