Goldbacks felled by late goal

The game got away from the Newburgh Free Academy boys’ soccer team during the final five minutes.

A late goal credited to Red Hook’s Ethan Kaiser gave the Red Hook Raiders a 3-2 win over the Goldbacks on Saturday at Academy Field.

The protests from the Newburgh bench immediately after the ball found its way into the back of the net as Newburgh coach Matt Iorlano believed there should have been a penalty on the play.

Kaiser came behind a Newburgh defender, appeared to have a hand on him, and then the ball rolled past goalkeeper Edwin Cuesta for the deciding goal.

Newburgh never held a lead in the game but were able to tie the score twice.

The Goldbacks had the first opportunity to score in the second minute when Erick Alvarez’s shot almost knocked Red Hook goalkeeper Angel Selenis across the goal line.

The Raiders took the lead in the 13th minute when Kaiser sent a Corner kick in from the left side and Cian Ryan blasted the ball into the top left corner of the goal, giving Red Hook (8-1-0) a 1-0 lead.
Newburgh got even in the 23rd minute, thanks, in part to a Red Hook mistake. Corbin Robinson was tripped up in the box, leading Javier Rodriguez to take a penalty box.

Red Hook goalkeeper Angel Selenis didn’t have a chance as Rodriguez’ shot caught him flatfooted and the game was tied.

Evan Jensen gave the Raiders a 2-1 lead off an assist from David Rendon in the 49th minute.

Then about eight minutes later, Rodriguez took a pass from Ethan Brown toward the right goalpost and a kick to the left got passed Selenis to tie the game at 2-2.

Selenis finished with six saves and Cuesta saved two for the Goldbacks.

Newburgh (5-3-2) was scheduled to return to the field on Monday against Pine Bush and is scheduled to go on the road Friday to face the Valley Central Vikings. Newburgh has beaten both teams once this season already.

The Goldbacks are still unbeaten in divisional play, although they have two ties (Kingston and Monroe-Woodbury).
