Newburgh’s Aleksey Makarov won the 100-breaststroke in division one during OCIAA championships in Washingtonville over the weekend with a time of 1:01.47 as the Goldbacks finished third with 259.5 points.
Makarov was third in the 200-freestyle, and Luka Samsonov was second in the 100-backstroke. The Goldbacks were third in the 400-freestyle relay and fourth in the 200-freestyle relay.
Dominick Batelic was 14th in the 11-dive competition Thursday in Cornwall after taking up diving this season for the first time. Batelic is also a distance runner on the indoor track team when he is not diving.
“It’s going pretty good. I made sections in my third meet,” he said.
Batelic said he has set many personal records this season after taking up diving without any off-season practices.
“I just came into it,” he said. “I’m improving.”
Now the Goldbacks will get ready for the Section 9 championships in Montgomery at Valley Central Feb. 14-16.
