Emma’s Delights opens on Broadway

As soon as you walk into Emma’s Delights Bakery you don’t feel like you’re just another customer. Once you’re inside, Emma, Val, or other members of the Zevallos family greet you with a friendly ‘Hello’ or ‘Buenos Dias’. If you’re looking at the pastries on display, they won’t rush you or push you to purchase one specific thing, you can just look around until you either decide to purchase something or not. If the place is busy, you’ll be asked politely if you could wait a little while instead of being treated with frustration or impatience. Even if they are busy, they’ll take some time to talk to you or answer any questions you may have if you’re confused. In short, Emma’s Delights provides a relaxed, comfortable shopping experience because Emma treats her customers like either old or new friends.

Emma’s Delights is a family-run bakery owned by Newburgh resident Emma Zevallos and specializes in homemade pastries and cakes native to Latin American countries.
“We’re from Newburgh ourselves so we know the community very well. Our experience with the community has been very good so far,” said Val.

Emma’s Delights owner, Emma Zevallos has been baking ever since she was 14. Originally from Peru, Emma said that when she was in high school she took a food industry class and was even chosen to represent her school in a baking competition. “I was filled with joy and knew that baking would always be my favorite thing to do,” said Emma.

While she felt at the time that she was unable to pursue a career in baking, eventually, her friends and family motivated her to open her own bakery, “because I’d excite their taste buds each and every time I shared a good bake with them.” Emma prepares all of the pastries sold in the store with the help of her family, including her husband Carlos, her older daughter Val, her younger son Benjamin, and her younger daughter Isabella.

Val, according to Emma, has followed in her footsteps and has been baking since she was seven. Val is currently a student at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park in the pastry and arts program and will graduate as a pastry chef in 2021.

“As the project of opening a bakery developed, we all worked as a family to make this dream come true,” Emma says.

The bakery’s menu includes pastries and cakes such as Alfajores, soft, delicate cookies from South America made with cornstarch, honey, almonds, hazelnuts, and dulce de leche; Pionono, a sponge cake that has been rolled up around a filling of dulce de leche lightened with whipped cream; Milhojas, stacked layers of puff pastry filled with dulce de leche; Bizcocho Dominicano, or Dominican cake; Torta Helada or gelatin cake; Crema Volteada, the Peruvian version of crème caramel, a smooth, sweet dessert that uses the Incan grain quinoa as its base; and Budin, a Puerto Rican bread pudding. The menu also includes classic treats such as chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes, and elephant ears.
Val says that Emma’s two most popular items are her freshly made empanadas, made with either beef or chicken, and the tres leches cake, a sponge cake made with three different kinds of milk. There are even drinks like Chicha Morada, a drink made a Peruvian variety of purple corn. According to Val, all of their pastries are baked on the premises and everything is made with local ingredients,

“Everything is made from scratch”, said Val, “We get most of our ingredients from either Restaurant Depot or local neighborhood grocery stores. Everything is local.”

In addition to baking cakes, Emma’s Delights also decorates cakes for local celebrations such as weddings, birthdays and quinceañeras.

Emma’s Delights location on Broadway makes the bakery very accessible to many Newburgh residents. There are parking spots in the street right in front of the shop and it’s within walking distance of many other shops so residents can do all of their shopping in one convenient location. The bakery provides a taste of Latin American culture to the City of Newburgh population, a large portion of which is Latin American. So if you’re in the Newburgh area and you’re looking for a taste of your culture or just looking to try some tasty new treats, stop into Emma’s Delights.

Emma’s Delights located on 494 Broadway Street in Newburgh is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
