BJ’s Wholesale Club coming to Town of Newburgh

Posted

BJ’s Wholesale Club is opening early 2021 at 401 Auto Park Place in Newburgh. The opening has been in works since 2019.

In September of 2019, the Town of Newburgh Planning Board held long discussions regarding the upcoming BJ’s Wholesale Club. Questions arose mostly concerning the site map, where they placed a traffic light at the four-way intersection of Route 17k where BJ’s Wholesale Club would be located.
Other concerns regarded stormwater management and permits from the New York State Department of Conservation for providing a fuel system.

In early January 2020, the Town of Newburgh Planning Board ultimately voted to waive a public hearing for BJ’s Wholesale Club because of the zone that it’s in.

At the January meeting, it was announced that the traffic signal was removed from the site plan after recommendations from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the amended site plan includes different routes that vehicles can take to enter the site.

BJ’s Wholesale Club in Newburgh will include a BJ’s gas location.

According to Yahoo Finance, the club is expected “to bring about 300 jobs to the region.”

“We’re thrilled to expand our presence in New York and bring outstanding value and savings to families in Newburgh,” said Lee Delaney, president and CEO, BJ’s Wholesale Club. “We look forward to opening our new clubs and BJ’s Gas location and continue our growth as a company.”

BJ’s Wholesale Club partnered with local real estate developer, Goddard Development Partners.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Goddard Development Partners and BJ’s Wholesale Club were able to move forward with the process.

“BJ’s was deemed an essential business, which includes the construction as well,” said Managing Partner, Adrian Goddard. “We got cleared to proceed pretty quickly. There was so little other construction at the time so we had a flying start.”

Their opening date remains as early 2021.

“People are very excited and continuing the enthusiasm,” said Goddard. “It’s very nice to see that.”
