An injured athlete gets words of encouragement

It has been a month since tragedy struck the family of a recent San Miguel Program graduate. On June 3, Cory Arias, a graduate of San Miguel Academy of Newburgh Class of 2016 and St. Benedict’s Prep Class of 2020 suffered a horrific accident. While helping with a painting project during a vacation with his family in Mexico, Cory was electrocuted by a low hanging utility line. His injuries included 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 90% of his body. Cory survived the accident and is currently being treated for his injuries.
During his time at San Miguel Academy, middle school of the 12-year human services and education program that begins with at-risk middle school boys and continues through high school and college, Cory was an active member in multiple extracurricular activities of the school. One of his favorites was his position on the rowing team. He was a proud Grey Bee on the Varsity 8x Rowing team at St. Benedict’s Prep. Cory’s continued triumphs over adversity attracted much praise and admiration from his peers, family, and friends. Most recently, it has drawn the attention of Daniel James Brown, author of the nonfiction novel, “The Boys in the Boat”. Brown’s best-selling novel tells the story of the University of Washington’s eight-oared rowing crew that represented the United States in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and their epic quest that would lead to a gold medal. Upon hearing the amazing story of a fellow rower, Brown sent Cory a copy of his novel, leaving a special message inside. The heartfelt message states “We are all in the boat with you…pulling for you, pulling with you. Row on!”
In the month since the horrific accident, Cory’s condition has greatly improved and making his way to a full recovery. He continues to surpass all expectations, even taking his first steps on his own on July 2. On June 26, San Miguel Academy hosted a triple graduation ceremony for middle school, high school, and college graduates in their “Class of 2020 Next Step Ceremony”. Due to the accident, Cory was unable to attend and be honored for his great achievement in graduating from St. Benedict’s Prep. Although he could not attend physically, this did not stop him from calling via video chat and delivering a heartfelt speech to all those in attendance just weeks after his accident. The speech was powerful, touching upon themes of overcoming adversity and brotherhood, receiving a standing ovation at its conclusion.
Cory truly embodies what it means to be an inspiration to others. He continues to defy the odds stacked against him and will continue to surpass any obstacle that comes in his way.
Cory is currently being treated for his injuries at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. There is a GoFundMe fundraiser in Cory’s honor (Friends for Cory Arias and Family) to help fund the extensive treatment required for his recovery.
