America Rows provides grant to Newburgh rowing club

Posted

On July 22, 2020, Anthony LoBiondo, Vice President of America Rows and Swims Newburgh presented Coach Ed Kennedy, president of the Newburgh Rowing Club, with a grant check in the amount of $2,000.00 to support summer programs for children in Newburgh.
“We are so appreciative of the ongoing support of America Rows and Swims Newburgh,” said Coach Kennedy.  “This grant allows us to provide small group, socially distant Summer youth programs.  Instead of the large summer rowing camp of the past, we are instead holding a mini summer program, limited to 20 older students.   They are assigned to smaller groups of 5 - 10 students each day.  We take their temperature daily, wear masks all day, and wash the boats down after each use.  We hold our session from 9 am - 1 pm, three days a week, and the kids enjoy kayaking and rowing in single sculls.”
“We are delighted to be able to make this summer  program possible for kids from Newburgh,” said Juliana LoBiondo, Director of America Rows and Swims Newburgh.  “About one-third of the students are here on either full or partial scholarships provided by America Rows and Swims Newburgh.  After having been cooped up inside for much of the spring, it’s great to see the kids getting out in the fresh air and enjoying the Hudson River.  America Rows has also established a Little Kids Free Library at the David Tamas Pavillion at the Newburgh Rowing Club.  Since the libraries are closed, and children’s books are expensive, we stock the little free library with donated books.  Parents can continue to read books to their kids at home and we have lots of chapter books for teens and older kids.  We are in particular focused on reaching the Spanish speaking community, and we communicate with parents in Spanish on a regular basis to find out their needs for the free library.  We are currently seeking books for adults, written in Spanish.”
